Grant Starter Kit for Owners: The Starter Set

Everything you need to make your first grant decision

The Starter Set is a grant starter kit of U.S. business owners and nonprofit leaders. It brings together the first three pieces of Ownerhood's Grant Readiness Toolkit (Start Here, Workbook 1: Foundation & Fit, and the Reference Guide), so you can decide whether grants fit your work and set yourself up to pursue them well.

Many owners start with a list of grants. We think the starting point should be a decision. The Starter Set gives you the decision, the plan around it, and a plain-language reference to back it up.

Who it's for

  • Business owners new to grants who want to start in the right place
  • Anyone deciding whether to pursue grants now, later, or not at all
  • Business owners who want a simple way to keep track of grant work from the start
  • Leaders of U.S.-based for-profit businesses, nonprofits, and fiscally sponsored projects, at any stage

What's in the set

  • Start Here: find your starting point, set a rhythm you can keep, and keep one record of your grant work in your Grant Profile and Learning Log.
  • Workbook 1: Foundation & Fit: decide whether grants fit your work, for which projects, and on what terms, in nine exercises that end with a go/no-go decision. New to grants? It's written as a beginner grant workbook, starting with whether grants fit at all.
  • Reference Guide: 46 grant terms in plain language, how grant money works, where to verify rules, the warning signs of scams, and seven conversation guides.

Together, they make a grant planning starter set you'll come back to at the start of each cycle.

How to use it

  • Open Start Here. Its path map shows where to begin, based on your situation. This takes about 30 minutes.
  • Work through Workbook 1 over two or three sittings. Keep the Reference Guide open for any term that's new to you.
  • Test your decision in the conversation guide at the end of Workbook 1, with an advisor, mentor, or peer.
  • Copy your answers into your Grant Profile in Start Here, so they're ready for your next step.

What you'll walk away with

  • A go/no-go decision for each of your projects: now, later, or not a fit
  • Your values and non-negotiables, written down before any funder asks you to bend them
  • A map of which funders your type of organization can likely reach
  • A clear-eyed look at timing, cash flow, and the true cost of applying
  • A practice rhythm on your calendar, and one record that carries forward
  • The warning signs of grant scams, so you can walk away from them

Good to know

  • Format: three PDFs. Start Here and Workbook 1 are fillable, and the Reference Guide has one fillable log. Use a PDF reader that supports forms, such as the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Time: about three to four hours of workbook time in all, plus one conversation.
  • Save a blank copy of Workbook 1 before you start. You'll come back to it at the start of each grant cycle.
  • Honest about rules: grant rules change and vary by funder, so the toolkit shows you what to check and who to ask. It isn't legal, tax, or financial advice, and it can't promise funding.

What comes next

When you decide to pursue grants, Workbook 2: Readiness & Pipeline is the next step. It's coming next, along with Workbook 3: The Application, Workbook 3S: The SBIR/STTR Path, and Workbook 4: Managing the Award. Start Here's path map already shows where each one fits.

Questions business owners ask

How is the set different from downloading the three separately? It's the same three product, together in one download, so you have everything you need for your first decision from the start.

Which one should I open first? Start Here. Its path map shows where to begin based on your situation. For most business owners, that's Workbook 1.

Can I check whether I'm ready before I download? Yes. Is My Business Ready for a Grant? walks you through a quick five-question check. The set takes it further, project by project.

Want the big picture first? Read what grant readiness really means in our plain-language guide.
